Hi,

I have a dataset where we have HRV measures during a stress induction procedure. We collected HRV at baseline, during a stress induction procedure and post stress. We collected HRV to understand sympathetic-parasympathetic regulation under stress and how this may influence cogntive processes such as emotion recognition.

I am coming across several articles that suggest that HRV may not be a good measure for sympathetic/parasympathetic regulation (Article The LF/HF Ratio Does Not Accurately Measure Cardiac Sympatho...

) The article specifically talks about LF/HF ratio, but I am now confused about how to interpret the other variables in my study. I have time and frequency domain measures such as SDNN, RMMSD, pNN50, LF powernu and HF powernu. I was under the impression that these variables measure sympathetic-parasympathetic regulation such that lower values mean more sympathetic and less parasympathetic activation; however the relationship does not seem to be linear. Can someone help me understand what these variables would inform me?
