We are thinking of binding NHS fluorescent ester dye to a primary amine on the silica surface, however, we are wondering whether it will fluoresce under ambient air conditions at all or just lose the fluorescence intensity greatly in comparison with e.g. in pure miliQ water?
The molecule should still be fluorescent in air (the powder is fluorescent, isn't it?). A possible exception would be a fluorophore that is pH dependent, such as fluorescein, if air drying causes it to become protonated.

Thanks Adam! If one would want to see a big difference in intensity in air compared to water (increase or decrease), which fluorophore would be the best?

I think you can consider air to be a hydrophobic environment compared to water.
