Abstract: The brain develops in concert and in coordination with the developing facial tissues, with each influencing the development of the other and sharing genetic signaling pathways. Studies have shown that autistics have different facial feature lengths from typically developing children. One of the facial tissues that is different in length are the facial muscles. The facial muscles exert contractions in a way that causes long-term hypokalemia. This is because the contractions are more intense compared to a typically developing group, and muscle contractions deplete potassium from intracellular membranes.
