I have a ecological background, but there is an excellent books about SEM: Grace, J. Structural Equation Modeling and Natural Systems. He offers philosophical and some statistical advice. If you know R, there is a package ('sem'), which I used, but you can see also 'Lavaan' package (http://www.r-bloggers.com/first-steps-with-structural-equation-modeling/)
