ICP mass spec and mercury analyzers are used to quantify mercury in samples. DMSA is a very good chelator, but often it contains mercury due to poor laboratory practice and manufacturing process. When using DMSA orally, GLP and GMP must be strictly followed. Personal experience as a a associate clinical lab director led me to explore the source of mercury in patients who had their amalgams removed and did not eat fish. Salvation of DMSA revealed 3,000 fold increased in mercury from the mercury analyzer and ICP MS found trace mercury in the capsule itself. This leads one to question if nationally these test are approve by the FDA and if they are of any use in assessing mercury depoisoning of patients. Please share your experience and knowledge.
