The mode of delivery is part of a complex web of factors that impact on learning and learners. The quality of digital infrastructure to support learning is a critical factor. The learning management system and quality of teaching resources are critical to participation and engagement. The knowledge and pedagogical practices of the educator within distance/online learning has been shown to be fundamental. For example, the social and academic presence of educators and their connection with their learners (through feedback and strategic interactions) also support learners and learning. Self-regulation in distance learning is therefore responsive to a raft of factors. A recently published systematic review, found at Article Supporting Self-Regulated Learning in Online Learning Enviro...
provides elaboration on these points and will provide you with some valuable further reading.
Yes, Prof. Raidy Teidy Rojas Angel Bello, if learning is to be asynchronous & using MOOC with proper LMS, self-management of learning can be achieved successfully.
Self management and distance education cannot happen without each other. You must have independence to a degree. Agree with Pedro L. Contreras E. and Chad Morrison
I would change the word "encourages" to "requires". You need to be able to self-manage to engage effectively in online learning. This is why it's not ideal for very young children
As Chad indicated: The mode of delivery is part of a complex web of factors that impact on learning and learners. This paper that focus on what help online students learning successfully can shed light on this issue:

Like any kind of learning you absolutely MUST put some thought into design and continuous assessment (formative and summative) for the course you are teaching via distance. A quick guide can be found here http://learntech.engr.tamu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/5-Steps-to-Teaching-Online.pdf and here https://learntech.engr.tamu.edu/faculty-resources/
I believe in symbiosis "face to face" and distance learning. We may find many "+" and "-", developed on our personal, practical experience or theoretical background... but may be... the main mission is not only "to survive", but also empower teaching and learning processes for better life long learning and self-development conditions, well-being of each learner, child, adolescent, or adult.
I have another opinion about Distance Education or e-learning. I will explain this opinion by giving an example from many issues that I face every day.
One of my students takes a full mark during one of my exams. In the lecture before the exam, he knows nothing. The same thing in the lecture after the exam, he also knows nothing about the material of the exam. Moreover, he knows nothing related to the two prerequisite courses of that course.
I think that you know Alzheimer's which is a general term for memory loss and the most common cause of dementia. This student seems to have Alzheimer's only for the exam material.
Before Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), our students usually registered from 12 to 15 credit hours. But during this learning opportunity, they usually register not less than 18 credit hours!!
Now, please look around you and count how many black offices for solving the exams and assignments are there.
From my point of view, e-learning alone will not succeed without traditional learning. Furthermore, I see that e-learning hasn't achieved the desired aims or results for developing countries and traditional learning is better. This is because there are many black offices for solving exam questions!! These offices made online learning a trading stock that resembles the slave-market.
At least, the hybrid learning of both of them is better than the traditional one. In any way, exams must be inside the educational institutes with the physical attendance of the students.
Well, I believe there is no single way or answer. Different approaches are possible and will vary from person to person, culture by culture, social arrangements, emotional intelligence etc. However, new technologies, experiments and tools should be explored to the full in the path of improving quality and universal delivery of a good education. I, for my part, interact, like and have an easy understanding and development in the use of new teaching platforms, I manage my activities well and I really like elearning.
It has been my experience this past year that in order to be really successful at distance learning a person must be pretty self disciplined. I had to learn to develop that habit as I was used to the face to face type of learning. I do learn better face to face, which I prefer, but it is possible to learn to be self disciplined enough to learn through distance learning.
I consider it to be quite true. Using ICT, students gain autonomy and responsibility. In Spain, these results have been observed in the investigation that we have carried out during the confinement period.
I was a studie in distance education modality during two years just to understand a little bit how this kind of modality works. I start before the Covid-19 and finish my program during the pandemic, in my expirience, before the pandemic we had to go at least two times at the semester to the univesrity to realize the exames, when the pandemic starts the old way to do de exames have to change because we coudn't go to de university. All this changes affect me, the fact that I have to go to the university to make the exames gives a diferent motivation and help me on my studies management. I think that distance education encourages self-management of learning, but I don't think that colect data just on the pandemic time is a little unfair, since a lot things affect the student in this time, today, as a professional on technology and educational field, I understand the teacher's role is really important on this and that the student will not catch up by himself, but using the rigth metodologys, it could be a great way to help then create independence.
Your perspectives are very important. The perspectives of learners who have transitioned to online learning during COVID-19 highlight several important factors that we know have profound impacts on learners and learning:
- for many, the transition to online learning was abrupt;
- the transition to online learning at scale exacerbated existing barriers to learning for particular groups of students, like a lack of reliable access to internet and to digital technologies;
- students were experiencing significant disruption in their own lives, with rapidly changing pressures related to care arrangements, finances, employment, housing and health;
- many students experienced and are still experiencing significant loss and trauma during the pandemic;
- many support services/agencies have been overwhelmed by the extent of need within student cohorts, exacerbating the challenge of maintaining momentum within studies;
- many educators have struggled to manage the same challenges as their students.
As we continue to evaluate the recent, rapid expansion of online and distance education post-pandemic, we will need to incorporate strategies to overcome these barriers and realities, alongside explorations of the ways that digital technologies and pedagogies support participation, engagement and achievement. There was a significant body of knowledge available to us prior to the pandemic and this will continue to build exponentially now.
The goal of distant education is to give chances for people to increase their knowledge and learning while still working. One problem stems from shifting ideas of what learning entails. The second issue stems from new learning opportunities made possible by technology. Constructivism, interpretivism, and computing technology, individually and frequently together, have redesigned the conception of learning's challenges and opportunities, resulting in new learning possibilities for almost all teaching and learning situations, including traditional classroom teaching, distance learning, and self-learning. This has give pace for individual for self-management and design strategies, techniques and approaches including goal setting, planning and managing their .to direct their activities and behaviours effectively.
Replacing face-to-face learning with the online one may be the only solution at these days of COVID-19. From my point of view, e-learning alone ( i.e. distance learning) will not succeed without traditional face-to-face learning. e-learning cannot be a substitute for face-to-face learning, it is complementary to classroom teaching.
Because e-learning hasn't achieved the desired aims or results, traditional learning is better. At least, the hybrid learning (i.e. blended learning) of both of them is better than the traditional one. This is especially true for the developing countries.
To diminish cheating, exams must be inside the scientific institutes like universities.
El uso de lavtecnoligia si contribuye a la autigestion del conocimiento, porque buscan informacion en diversas fuentes, con actualizacion, de diversos autores y opiniones, entre otras razones
I consider this to be quite true. If someone is trying to learn using Distance Education then it becomes absolutely imperative to learn self management. If you can learn to budget your time, energies, as well as a slew of other characteristics then you will not succeed in learning through Distance Education.
Now for an answer to a question you did not ask. I do not believe that Distance Education will ever be as effective as face to face education. Of course there are exceptions to every rule but I believe that for the most part people learn more effectively through the back and forth interaction that comes from face to face learning. Learning can be done using Distance Education and it can be a quality education. I just think that face to face learning comes with something special.
I agree with this statement "Distance Education using technology encourages self-management of learning" In addition, culture of virtual learning along with classroom learning reinforces better understanding on a given topic or subject.
