I agree with Kamal that Discovery, Invention, and Rationalization are the three set of possible statuses of scientific results.

I believe that a patent - a document which identifies the object of intellectual property and its owner.
I think the RG "Patents" means publications that describe scientific objects of intellectual property, which has been patented.
Scientific discovery is proof of the existence of a previously unknown natural object, but a scientific invention - the creation of a previously unknown artificial object.
Ljubomir brings a distinct and often ignored aspect of scientific discovery which is the current dependence on technology(through patents) for the advancement of science. While I believe it would not fit with Vladimir's scientific statuses it could be part of a larger model in which technology dependence is modeled as part of the scientific status( current high energy physics would not be possible without particle accelerator, detector and computational improvements)

My first thought was that we could add scientific theories. However, in my search I came with the attached document and info within:
According to EPO Guidelines, scientific theories are a ―more generalized form of discoveries‖, so the same rationale for not patenting applies to them.

I believe that the patenting of scientific discoveries and inventions would complicate activities of plagiarists.
