What is the standard industrial process for separating dimethylamine gas (to about 99% purity) from a mixture with trimethylamine? I am looking for how this is done on an industrial scale, since we're finding this separation tricky on such a large scale.
Could you please share more details. For example: Have you done it on an lab scale by using a distillation process? How is the ratio % of DMA and TMA in initial and final mixture? and so on.

thank you for sharing this very interesting technical problem with the RG community. You are absolutely right in that the large-scale separation of dimethylamine from trimethylamine is rather tricky. The boiling boints of the two amines are only a few degrees C apart (dimethylamine: 6.8 °C, trimethylamine: 3 °C). The situation gets even more complicated because the two amines form form an azeotropic mixture at normal pressure. Thus a simple one-stage separation by careful fractional distillation is impossible. Apparently this problem has been circumvented by the inventor of the patent cited below:
