In recent disruptive business environment, product and service innovation is no longer enough on their own and business model innovation plays a more integral role in competitive advantage of any enterprise.

Especially, start-ups, new market entrants and SMEs are more innovative in defining new business models than incumbents. So SMEs can be definitely a good research group, but even better than them are start-ups or established businesses that are trying to explore new markets and customer segments.

Basically, Entrepreneurs can commercialize their innovative new products and so dynamize the economy and it's good step towards better established country. In order to maintain long-run economic growth, the companies in the economy need to have motivation for product and process innovation and for entrepreneurial activities.

And yes, it can be a research sample, even it would be appreciated.

This question has a lot of current significance, especially due to the major shift to digital workplace we have seen as part of covid19 pandemic related; ever since the hype is at the peak. Every business now copying up with this shift itself is the key relationship between digital entrepreneurship and business model innovation, I guess. And to critically evaluate this being observed as a creative destruction to the conventional manpower oriented business is important.

SMEs can be a good research sample, however I would suggest to look for govt. semi govt organizations as well especially education institutions that would open up more research scope , for instance, how digital entrepreneurship affect the education industry and vice-versa -how to bring innovation to cop-up with the current pace of digital advancement.
