You could try performing 33S-NMR. That would also show if you actually have Mo5+ in the material: in that case it would be paramagnetic and you would have a broad background signal. If you can actually get an NMR spectrum then the "Mo5+ peak" would be some sort of polarization/charging/... effect.

Talha Nisar the problem is, that S22- and S0 have very similar binding energies, and MoS3 and MoS2+S also give the same atomic ratio...

I am also facing same thing, why Mo(5+) is showing 5+ oxidation state, there is any possiblity of defects due to sulphur like MoS3. if anyone knows kindly help and share reference.
