Based on my perception, organic farming we can use organic based fertilizers like biofertilizers, Azolla, Panchakavya, Neem oil extract etc. Whereas, in natural farming no application of any kind of inputs.
@ Paramavisam, in organic farming, organic fertilizers and manures like compost, vermicompost, cow dung manure, etc. are used and added to farmlands from external sources. In natural farming, neither chemical nor organic fertilizers are added to the soil. Organic foods are grown without artificial pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides. Organic meat, eggs, and dairy products are obtained from animals that are fed natural feed and not given hormones or antibiotics. Natural foods are free of synthetic or artificial ingredients or additives. organic farming or modern farming rely on sustainable ways of growing crops. These techniques are farm-focused, improving the natural fertility of the farm. Natural farming is an ecological farming approach established by Masanobu Fukuoka (1913–2008), a Japanese farmer and philosopher, introduced in his 1975 book The One-Straw Revolution. Natural farming is a closed system, one that demands no human-supplied inputs and mimics nature. As such, all organic production methods around the world are based on four principles: Health, Fairness, Ecological Balance and Care. These principals provide a vision for agriculture that inspires environmentally friendly cultivation and production.
In my opinion, natural agriculture can use some organic materials such as animal manure, like what has long been used in agriculture. Therefore, it cannot be said that natural agriculture is separate from organic agriculture.
The principle of natural farming is to maintain the cleanliness of the land, without utilizing chemical fertilizers, pesticides or organic fertilizers on the market or livestock dung manure, but mainly use plant materials such as weeds, dead branches and leaves as compost. It advocates to make full use of the power of healthy soil and to cultivate by means of the seasons in a bid to follow natural law and restore the natural ecological environment via which the healthy agri-product can be provided and ensure the safety of agri-outputs.
Organic agriculture is to comply with fixed organic agricultural production standards. During the agri-production process, biological products obtained by genetic engineering are prohibited, meanwhile, chemically synthesized pesticides, fertilizers, growth regulators, feed additives and other substances are not used. By means of complying with the natural law and ecological principle, it should adopt a series of sustainable agricultural technologies to maintain a sustainable and stable agricultural production system in a bid to supply the healthy, organic and high-quantity and quality agri-product. It is beneficial to security and health of agricultural production.
Their common characteristic is to provide healthy agri-product. Comparing to the organic farming, natural farming is less high-productivity than organic agriculture.
In organic farming, organic fertilizers and manures like compost, vermicompost, cow dung manure, etc. are used and added to farmlands from external sources.
In natural farming, neither chemical nor organic fertilizers are added to the soil. In fact, no external fertilizers are added to soil or give to plants whatsoever.
In natural farming, decomposition of organic matter by microbes and earthworms is encouraged right on the soil surface itself, which gradually adds nutrition in the soil, over the period.
Organic farming still requires basic agro practices like plowing, tilting, mixing of manures, weeding, etc. to be performed.
In natural farming there no plowing, no tilting of soil and no fertilizers, and no weeding is done just the way it would be in natural ecosystems.
Organic farming is still expensive due to the requirement of bulk manures, and it has an ecological impact on surrounding environments; whereas, natural agriculture is an extremely low-cost farming method, completely molding with local biodiversity.
There are many working models of natural farming all over the world, the zero budget natural farming (ZBNF) is the most popular model in India. This comprehensive, natural, and spiritual farming system is developed by Padma Shri Subhash Palekar.
Organic farming is a more complex and involved practice, where the inputs used are the same as the ones used in natural farming, however, they are not the only variable. Organic farming requires practices aimed at the preservation of the health of the soil by taking into consideration sustainability and diversity.
Natural farming may refer practising of farming without adding any artificial materials. In the case of organic farming, bio-fertilizers, manures like compost, vermicompost, cow dung etc. are used in the farmlands. For protecting insects and diseases organic substances are used in organic farming.
Natural farming or ecological farming is recognized as the high-end objective among the proponents of sustainable agriculture and organic farming is defined by the use of fertilizers of organic origin such as compost manure, green manure and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting.
In fact, it is not entirely correct to call natural farming without any application. In natural farming, there are inputs used for different purposes such as animal manure, vinegar, sugar.
In this case, I think it would be a correct approach to define the distinction between natural farming and organic farming as a form of organic farming practices based on a certain basis, and a system in which the procedure is recorded and audited.
There is organic farming often called natural or wild culture which eshews from inputs.
The problem with this in my opinion is that many areas where this is practiced are found with multiple deficiencies and excesses in the soil environment.
I prefer the rigor of certified organic agriculture with is based on having a stric paper tail to confirm practices and looks to setting up a comprehensive plan to improve and conserve the soil resource itself from systematic practices employed.
When we have inspectors and reviewers and the agriculture is based on confirmed plans the best results can be obtained.
organic farming should have soil important and not just eschewing agricultural synthetic inputs as their goal.
I believe there is a misconception regarding natural farming.
No farming practices can be done without any input.
Even Permaculture, where nothing is introduced or taken away from the farm, uses inputs coming from the leftover from previous crops and the animals living on the farm.
Farming without any input is called neglected farming and is the shortest way to soil erosion, due to the depletion of organic matter.
Presently prevalent and advocated natural farming by Subhash Palekar, relies heavily on cow based products ie. jeevamrit or ghanamrit or cow urine etc. for protection measures and restrict the use of biofertilizers, biopesticides and biodynamic along with buffer zone etc. commonly recommended for organic farming
