Difference between Peasants and Farmers:

01. Peasant :

A peasant, for majority of the cases, reflects an agricultural labourer who is specifically poor and occupies the lower rung of social hierarchy.

• A member of the lowly social class which toils on the land, constituted by small farmers and tenants, sharecroppers, farmhands and other laborers on the land where they form the main labor force in agriculture and horticulture.
• A country person.
• An uncouth, crude or ill-bred person.
• a worker unit

02. Farmer :

A farmer on the other hand denotes a man who works on agricultural land and/or owns a farmland. The term farmer does not denote the person's economy or social position.

• A person who works the land or who keeps livestock, especially on a farm.
• The lord of the field, or one who farms the lot and cope of the crown.

Already checked Ellis' Peasant Economics? Van der Ploeg developed farming style research and distinguished styles at farm level, for different sectors, and more recently publishes differentiating between entrepreneurial and peasant strategies among farmers. So for drafting your proposal thinking in terms of different 'modes of production' (see on what you like groups to score) and names / labels for these different strategies to me seems most 'productive' - not sure if this comment is of help to you.

The farmer can be placed in different hierarchies of the society (eg: upper, middle or lower classes) and becoming a farmer is based on the accessibility of production factors such as land, capital and entrepreneurship. However, the peasant is the person who got only labour as a production factor. They are ultimately falling into the lower level of the social hierarchy. Foundation of the peasantry is based on inaccessibility of production factors such as land, capital and entrepreneurship. Farmers can be found in any hierarchy of society according to the scale of assets they got. Even though the farmer is in any hierarchy, he is more independent than peasant and a risk-taker (entrepreneur) as well whilst peasant is not like that. Difference between the peasant and farmer is mainly based on the mode of production. In the early stages of the world, farmers were mainly identified through land ownership. However, it’s being converted into accessibility for capital and entrepreneurship. The following reading may be important because both farmer and peasant mostly can be identified in agrarian societies.

I want to collaborate a little more in the conceptualization of what "peasant" means, considering the good work of my predecessors.

Peasant is characterized by being more than the person who develops an agricultural activity. It is a complex way of lifestyle on the direct correlation between territorial heritage and its condition of life. It is deep scheme where the territory represents something more than the agroecosystem, that is a family heritage, it is their means of survival for him and his family.

At the level of decision-making, these will be biased by the attachment to heritage. Not only the economic and productive aspects are considered, but the socio-cultural and environmental components are taken into account. The peasant is conceived as the essence of rurality, in a broad and deep sense.

I recommend this book "Économie rurale" by Robert Badouin (French).
