The terms d-spacing and interlayer spacing are often used interchangeably in layered materials like MXenes, but they have subtle distinctions in their meaning:

  • d-spacing:d-spacing specifically refers to the distance between planes in a crystal structure, measured along the crystallographic axis perpendicular to these planes. For layered materials like MXenes, d-spacing is the distance from the center of one layer to the center of the next, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. For Ti₃C₂ MXene, the d-spacing includes the entire thickness of the Ti₃C₂ layer itself, as well as any spacing that may result from surface functional groups.
  • Interlayer spacing:Interlayer spacing refers specifically to the space or gap between two adjacent layers, excluding the thickness of the layers themselves. It is essentially the “free” space between the layers that might be available for intercalation of ions, molecules, or functional groups. In MXenes, the interlayer spacing increases after etching because the aluminum layer is removed, creating more room between the remaining Ti₃C₂ layers, which can be further expanded by intercalating ions or molecules.
  • Key Difference

    In summary, d-spacing includes the thickness of both the layers and the interlayer space, while interlayer spacing refers only to the gap or free space between the layers themselves.

    In practical terms, the d-spacing is what’s commonly measured by X-ray diffraction, whereas the interlayer spacing is inferred as part of that value.
