VM use abstraction of physical machine through Hypervisor type 1 (bare metal, where hypervisor layer is installed directly on hardware) and type 2 (that use host Operating systems like Windows, type 2 is installed on host OS).

Container is Virtual enviroment for aplication execution, you can think about container like "light PC" with only task to execute peace of code. Connecting all container and their management is called orchestration. Hope this helped

As mentioned, containers are a lighter weight kind of virtualization - you can get more containers on a physical host because of the type of virtualization as well as from getting rid of files and code that you don't need. VMs are definitely more resource intensive.

It is important when trying to understand the benefits of containers to look at why people like to use microservices to build applications instead of monolithic VM based architectures. Organizations want to be able to quickly add and update features. This is hard to do if applications are lumped into large monoliths of code - any changes will be need to be run through large time consuming regression tests. As an alternative, if an application is built with a number of microservices, you can develop, test, and update pieces of those applications much more quickly. The orchestration that takes place containers through software like Kubernetes makes it even easier. You can take a collection of containers that implement some function, have them talk in their own isolated and private network space, and then expose only the function that needs to interact with the rest of the world.

we explain how we made design decisions to use containers in some situations and VMs in other situations when building a data analysis platform. We had trouble containerization a particular function, and so to get it working, we ended up using a VM.

You asked what OS's and frameworks are used. On the project above, we used Linux and docker and Kubernetes services provided by a Cloud Service Provider. I have worked on another project that used Windows and Kubernetes. Particular versions of Windows can be difficult/impossible to be run in containers.
