Of course many question such as that were around back in 1980 when I first wrote How Designers Think. But then we had little evidence about the actual practice of design and about how the skills are acquired both academically and professionally. We had a very limited understanding of the nature of design problems. We knew design was a simultaneously frustrating and yet intellectually rewarding occupation, but we had little understanding of why.
A lot of existing literature give different reasons for the success of architects. One common trait i observe is their ability to apply knowledge to tasks on a case-by-case basis in unique and solution oriented approaches. A lot is also dependent on the materialization of schemes, there are many others that would have been recognized as successful if their projects came to light. In conclusion, the probability of success increases with each attempt at success, designers can increase their chances of success by attempting to solve more problems.

Does that mean they think like us.. see the case like us.... and try to make some solutions... ??? ...
I feel it could go both ways. The ideal determinant should be how best the design problem was solved using the most relevant and creative means/ideas. The level of creativity might then have to be the variance.
