In many documents, the procedure for pH determination does not refer to the effect of double layer thickness on the ratio of solid to liquid. For soils without montmorillonite, the ratio 1:1 or 1:2 is ok, but for soil contain high montmorillonite content, these ratios are not suitable because montmorillonite has the high water holding capacity and a large thickness of double layer. So my concern is how to determine the ratio of soil to liquid when determining the pH of montmorillonite.
