I am looking for detailed structural and geological maps of NW Himalayan regions. I do have a few good quality published maps but it covers only a small portion of the region.
For detailed structural and geological map you can visit the Geological Survey of India site: www.portal.gsi.gov.in/ You can download maps, reports, records,Extended abstracts (may be useful to you), memoirs, special publications etc.of area of your interest mostly free of cost after registering yourself. You can compile/extracts information as per your your requirement from these documents. You to spent some time in searching and extracting relevant information.
Hope you must have visited site such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_the_Himalaya for general geology and maps.
With best wishes,
Dr. Indra Prakash
Ex. Dy. Director General, GSI,
Visiting Faculty, Bhaskaracharya Space Applications Center and Geoinformatics (BISAG)
I've not looked into this for some time, but some large scale data (at least for India) can be accessed via the OneGeology portal (http://portal.onegeology.org/OnegeologyGlobal/). From memory this can also be accessed within a GIS package as a WMS/WFS link (e.g. ArcGIS or QGIS) - however, you can only really display these data within the GIS, not edit and modify the vector data.
I think the major issue is that the Himalayan range crosses multiple political boundaries and so no one Government geological survey produces a map / GIS package across the range or perhaps across all of the areas you are interested in, in the NW Himalaya.
Yes, there are a number of political problems that makes mapping difficult. I do agree with Dr. Lloyd.
Dr. Soumyajit I very much agree that one needs to make a new geological map using whatever is available, and by doing detailed field work. I have read most of the available literature on NW Himalayas but I thought may be there are some useful papers which I may have missed.
Would love to read Prof. Thakur's book.
Dr. Anup I have those two papers. Thank you for your suggestions.
There are geological/tectonic maps of parts of western NW Himalaya by Desio, 2) Fuchs, 3) Tahirkheli and Jan, 4) KK Sharma, 5) Searle and Khan, 6) Pecher et al.,and 7) Geol. Surv. Pakistan. There may be more!
You would need to to seek the help of the Geological survey of India (GSI) and its counterpart (GSP) in Pakistan. The latter have produced a large number of quadrangle maps (1:50,000) of the NW Himalayan districts of Pakistan. They have a catalogue of publications and most maps should be available on sale. I am sure this would also be the case with the GSI.
