I am doing an additive manufacturing simulation in ABAQUS/CAE 2017.
I have two working subroutines: DFLUX and UEPACTIVATIONVOL which both do their jobs correctly in separate models. I need to combine them but for my moving surface flux, the surface I define in the model does not work due to the activating elements during the analysis form the UEPACTIVATIONVOL. (The surface I define in the GUI for the heat flux does not exist at t = 0 since the elements are inactive)
Is there a way to define the top element face as a surface and change that in a subroutine for my DFLUX subroutine to call so the heat source will be applied on the surface of elements on one layer and then apply to the elements top face on the next layer?

One may utilize both of the subroutines using a similar approach to Dantin et al (Towards an Open-Source, preprocessing framework for simulating material deposition for a directed energy deposition process). If you define the laser position as a function of time you can move the laser relative to the coordinates of a discretized path. By keeping track of your layer height, you can set Z = Coords(3) - posZ, where posZ is the surface height of your layers. When you change your z-step and activate elements on the next layers, your posZ will also increase by that height and you can repeat.
It helps to follow a similar approach to Dantin et al and discretize the laser path from the G-code and create two files: 1) an element activation array for UEPACTIVATIONVOL and 2) a laser coordinate array (time,x,y,z,power) for DFLUX.
Manik Patil During a subroutine is the best way and then save it an SDV. In USDFLD, save the previous temp and current temp then use parameter DTIME to determine the cooling rate. See below for code in USDFLD:

You need to add field variables to utilize FIELD(N) so you can do something like this in the input file where you define conductivity:
*CONDUCTIVITY, DEP = 3
After the code above in USDFLD, this is typically where one would calculate phase fractions, etc.
