I am asking about aluminium metal matrix composites, is there any relation among the theoretical density, experimental density and porosity? Answer with reference is more preferred. Thanks
What kind of relationship do you mean?
(De/Dt)*100 = % theoretical density
100 - % theoretical density= % porosity
De: Experimental density

as far as I know, the theoretical density is greater than the experimental one. The porosity can be estimated from the equation:
Porosity [%]= 100*(d_th-d_exp)/d_th
d_exp = experimental density,
d_th = theoretical density.
The Archimedes principle can be used for the d_th measurement. However, in this equation, all elements of the microstructure reducing the density of the material are treats as pores.

From the question you have put forward, you are probably looking for a mathematical relationship relating the three mentioned parameters.
Firstly, the experimental density is never constant due to the various voids and porosity formations found in the composite after its synthesis.
It is therefore very difficult to arrive at a particular mathematical relation that would stand for all experimental possibilities.
The equations mentioned in the previous answers are the one's generally used. They are conventional and are reliable enough.
Although, for better results a gas pycnometer can always be used.

The percent porosity of the composites was evaluated using the relations:
% porosity = {(ρT – ρEX) ÷ ρT} × 100%
can we get theoretical porosity without measuring experimental density?
