Does anyone know if you can create custom distance grids in Google Earth i.e. based on distance rather than co-ordinates? I have searched the internet for an answer but none are forthcoming. I don't want to manually create the grid but have an overlay grid that I can set distances e.g. 50 m grids. Sorry it seems a strange question but someone out there may know if it is possible.
Diane, Yes it's possible sort of. I've decoded Google's projection and I am able to track the mouse coords and covert to lat/long over the image. Thus I know the coords of the image displayed. Thus it would be possible to paint a grid on the image in the desired projection. I'm not in ARI today or possibly for the next week due to the works but I could show you what I have. Peter Oh BTW I'm using Google Maps but I imagine it's very similar.
Another option that I have used, I am a GIS Analyst, is to create a custom grid in say ArcGIS and then use a geoprossesing tool to export to a kml. In this way you could set your point of origin or a set of reference point to which you could align your grid.
