How can I calculate a correlation between a factor (group of items) and the total score on a survey? In particular, I am referring to the Learned Helplessness Scale (LHS) (Quinless & Nelson, 1988) which comprises 5 factors. I want to see which factor is most strongly correlated with a high score on the LHS. Can I use Pearson's? If I use SPSS, are there any specific tests/options (boxes) to check that I should keep in mind?
