Is it proper procedure to create the x-level interaction term outside the model using the non-centered variables then center the new interaction term to include in the model?

Testing both ways shows it doesn't seem to matter, despite the values being very different. I suppose despite absolute differences, relatively they are not that different?

My confusion here is that an interaction between two centered variables will be screwy since values at the low end of their distributions (those below the average and hence negative) multiply to high positive values.
