Cross flow with 0.1µ fitration is the BAT for DBP's control?

Currently GAC,PAC,resins and / or RO has been proved to help in disinfection by prodcuts control by reducing NOM prescursors in drinking water.

For the last 6 years we have been testing a method which apperas to be the BAT for TTHM control.

Using a ceramac membrane (0.1µ) in cross flow mode, we have found the the coagulant agent can be concentrated upto 1,500 ppm.

This enhanced enhanced coagulation scheme allows to reject a more broad range of dissolned organic content from the raw water

consequently less chlorine is used and less TTHM is formed, without he use of GAC,PAC,resins or RO.

Will appreciate your comments ,questions and annalysis in order to determine if this filtration technique has the potentia lto beconme the BAT for TTHM control in drinking water.

Carlos Gonzalez , quite interesting developments (Congrats!),

We have conducted some researcher two year period in Thailand at (high raw water turbidity conditions) with Ceramic membranes. Our results were also interesting regarding the THM potential removal in drinking water. We operated dead end filtration.

By the way, definition BAT in this case is not so easy, what are the parameters you want to consider for BAT? If we think about Technological aspects, we may argue GAC,PAC,resins and / or RO are better. However, if we go for cost benefit or LCA type of study, then we may able to show MF is better. (We are currently doing such kind of work).

Thanks for the feedback. Agree for determination of a "real BAT" both OPEX and CAPEX costs must be considered. In our case we have observed energy costs to be close to 0.3 kwhr/m3,man hour ,coagulant and chlorine costs lower than conventional filtration, so total OPEX is close to $USD 0.15 / m3. As always smaller units will be more expensive than larger units. A good estimate for a 15,000m3/day is around USD$ 470 /m3.

GAC,PAC, resins and RO OPEX may be larger than our estimates, have no actual figures, will appreciate any information on this.

We feel cross flow filtration has the additional benefit of concentrating the coagulant agent o in that sense be more efficient that direct ceramic filtration regarding removal of DBP precursors. Carlos Gonzalez gitpr@gitpr,com
