Currently, classical clinical trials are reportedly conducted. The use of the drug in treatment has been suggested between the start of the epidemic and pandemic. Both, I guess, is known to you. My second guess is that remdesiver is already used in treatment in some cases already.

The question boils to Why are governments not more pro-active?

Thank you. Yes, my point exactly. Normal R and D takes years for approval, by then it may be too late. Too late already for the thousands who have died. Common sense calls for less "red tape" during a catastrophe.

Yes, it has been shown to have antiviral activity, including against coronavirus. We are supposed to wait while a vaccine is tested for dosing schedule. "Flattening the curve" may only prolong the inevitable infection with the virus. What are our rights to preventative and curing treatments? The most vulnerable of our population currently appear to be older and medically compromised individuals. Also, the most severely ill will require ventilators, ICU beds and critical care staff, and all are currently utilized to capacity, resulting in an increasing number of newsworthy disasters already. I suggest that prophylaxis and treatment should be made available, as a medical right, in this time of impending catastrophe. Treatments that have not had time to advance to final approval may be beneficial for saving life or limb, with those patients on the exponential end of " the curve" probably glad to sign a 'waiver of liability.' As far as prophylaxis and treatment, I refer first to the vaccines that are being tested correctly and for dosage. With a century of vaccine research, I think they have a pretty good estimate of the required dose. Can we not ramp up production and start giving it to the most vulnerable, at least? Secondly, there are currently thousands of patients who have recovered from COVID-19, can these not be a source of gamma globulin for the more serious ill, at least? Stem cell lines are another possible therqpy. Thirdly, there are various antiviral drugs which are safe and possibly effective but obviously have not had the time to be tested. For example, remdesivir appears to be effective against other Corona viruses, probably would have some effect against Covid-19. Could we not ramp up production of these agents and allow our vulnerable patients to have access to them, when otherwise it looks like high mortality and morbidity, with our only treatment available being "social distancing?" Thank you for allowing me to make these comments.

A patient in Kerala, India who had earlier tested positive for COVID-19, responded well to the drugs combination of Ritonavir and Lopinavir, and his latest test results showed he has recovered after giving the drugs for seven days. The result of the test of his samples conducted three days after giving him the drugs returned negative.

April 28, 2020. Unfortunately, the last study published in JAMA did not show that those Antivirals had a beneficial effect. Further research needed. To date, apparently no antiviral agents have been highly successful, but much work to be done. With many governments releasing home containment, we will see phase two of the infection and fatality curve, which if history serves us well, will be worse than the first phase ( and phase three even worse, c.f. 1918 Swine flu).

Okay, I started this discussion in early March 2020. I recommended remdesivir at that time; ir has now come full circle. Read the BBC report published July 01, 2020; the USA has purchased all supplies of remdesivir.

BBC News July 01, 2020:

"The US is buying nearly all the next three months' projected production of Covid-19 treatment remdesivir from US manufacturer Gilead.

The US health department announced on Tuesday it had agreed to buy 500,000 doses for use in American hospitals.

Tests suggest remdesivir cuts recovery times, though it is not yet clear if it improves survival rates.

Gilead did sign a licensing deal in May for production outside the US but it is still in its early stages.

"President Trump has struck an amazing deal to ensure Americans have access to the first authorised therapeutic for Covid-19," Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

A course of treatment in the US will cost $2,340 (£1,900).

Nine companies can make the drug under licence outside the US for distribution in 127 mostly poorer countries, and the cost is lower. But the project is still in its early stages.

Additional quantities are being manufactured for use in clinical trials.

But critics say the US move to buy up so much stock from Gilead itself undermines international co-operation on Covid, given that other countries have taken part in trials of remdesivir, originally an anti-viral against Ebola."

I hypothesize that the US Health Department's purchase of almost all of future remdesivir production foretells what they think is the future, and that is that Phase Two of the COVID-19 Pandemic is coming soon, and with a tremendous increase in morbidity and mortality as was seen in the 1918 Pandemic. It also seems to indicate that they are putting their faith in this drug, that it has the most significant statistics for COVID-19 treatment, to date. The rest of the world may be "out of luck" but then the USA has the highest percentage of cases right now.
