I would recommend learning about Grice's Maxims of communication:
1. The maxim of quantity, where one tries to be as informative as one possibly can, and gives as much information as is needed, and no more.
2. The maxim of quality, where one tries to be truthful, and does not give information that is false or that is not supported by evidence.
3. The maxim of relation, where one tries to be relevant, and says things that are pertinent to the discussion.
4. The maxim of manner, when one tries to be as clear, as brief, and as orderly as one can in what one says, and where one avoids obscurity and ambiguity.

Thee are many who have moved to more strategy oriented approaches to SLA. I think that researchers/theoreticians with a Cognitive/Developmental Perspective (interested in the processes and mechanisms of SLA but also from a cognitive model primarily) can give you some direction. Michael Long and his Interaction Hypothesis and Merrill Swain and her take on the Comprehensible Output Hypothesis are two likely candidates from this perspective. From a Sociocultural Perspective, Firth and Wagner and Language socialization theory focuses on influence of social context and interactional/conversational dynamics and the importance of the tasks employed (functional and authentic). depending on the ´level´ of speech production you are working with, there is Judit Kormos (interestingly, shes Hungarian), or Norman Segalowitz - as far as I know, both wrote works dealing with psycholinguistic issues - cognitive fluency / utterance fluency and its measurement, J. Kormos also created her model of Foreign lang. production based on J. W. Levelt´s ´blueprint of the speaker´.
