Could the potential difference between the discs like parallel electrodes of glow discharge be equal/different to plasma potential? If the voltage across the electrodes is 500 V, what will be plasma potential? Have plasma potential any relation with voltage across the powering electrodes?
The plasma potential is a thermodynamic quantity depending on the Debye length and therefore on the plasma composition. It is the property of the plasma indicating how difficult is for a charge to escape from the plasma. In principle, Plasma potential and the applied potential are independent quantities. However, the applied potential determine the plasma composition, i.e. the ionization degree, and therefore the plasma potential. As you know the effect of the electric field in the plasma depends on the reduced electric field E/N. Therefore, different effects can be obtained in different pressure ranges. Obviously, the plasma potential tends to equilibrate the applied potential, with a residual field in the bulk to sustain ionization and maintain the plasma potential. The magnitude of this field depends on the pressure because of the electron energy distribution, and therefore the ionization rate, is a function of E/N.
Applied voltage between the electrodes will certainly affect the plasma potential.
