I am investigating a blue quartz occurrence via FTIR. The quartz grains were ground to a fine powder. 2 mg of powder were mixed with 148 mg of KBr, pressed and then analysed. All the samples measured gave multiple and variable peaks within the 1168-1060 cm-1 interval. When blue quartz powder was heated to 800 degrees Celsius for 24 hours and then measured, only two peaks appeared within the 1168-1060 cm-1 interval, around 1168 and 1085 cm-1. I would like some suggestions as to what could cause the peaks of the unheated blue quartz within the 1168-1060 cm-1 interval. Thank you.
Quartz is a tetrahedral molecule in crystal formation, and heating it pushes it closer to liquifying. On the way quartz polymorphs are produced, and in this process the electrovalent bonds are gaining energy. The peak change is that energy gain, and will change the energy of the emitted photons.
Aden Handasyde, thank you for the reply, but the issue is that my quartz samples show unusual peaks prior to heating. Heated samples show peaks consistent with regular low-quartz. Also, the heated samples were measured after cooling down to room temperature. Perhaps there is some fluid phase which is lost during heating or structural defects fixed to some extent by the alpha to beta quartz transition.
