Knowing that we can publish anything for free in various platforms (RG, Academia, private websites, etc..)
We only would need something like Scholar to ensure a free counting of citations, and this would give an idea about the popularity of papers.
RG also does this, with the limitation that it depends on volunteering of each author to put his papers or not on the platform.

The indexes used to assess our publication production (h index, +/- combined with IF) all depends on the number of citations of our work, and are given by Clarivate analytics (ex Thompson) and Elsevier, which are used by our administrations.
So we MUST publish in indexed Journals to inprove our personal metrics, and all this under the control of huge international edition companies...
We could very well create groups of scientists to assess and publish papers on free websites . Where do we need an intermediate to do this ? -except that they rule firmly the whole system that they created around the h and IF indexes...Utopia for now, but it seems not so far if we can organize this.

We could also start an alternative way, which would not mean stop publishing with big companies.
Long ago, there were no big companies in the game... all Journals were rules by a team of scientists, accompanied by a small editorial staff which task was to typeset the proofs before printing, and the journals were sent by postmail to readers... So we had to pay to receive the journals, but not to pay for a big edition company....
It is paradoxical that with the revoluition of internet which allows each one to be connected with the whole earth, we are now forced to pay for free things...
