In recent years, the applications of low temperature plasma (cold plasma) has been spreading in multidisciplinary scientific fields. The future challenges for developed or developing countries would be availability of food. Vertical farming is expected to be best solution for future. In vertical farming, visible light sources are used to maintain the photosynthesis process for growing the crops. Low temperature plasma contains the visible (using mixture of gases) and UV radiation (for photosynthesis) as well as many reactive species (NOS, ROS) to provide the minerals (work as fertilizer) and work as pesticides. Could low temperature plasma play a role Instead of the visible sources in vertical farming? If not then what are the major shortcomings.
Yes, cold plasma has a great potential for vertical and urban farming. The production of nitrates/nitrites in liquid media using air and electricity is what renders the applicability of atmospheric pressure cold plasma to agriculture. However, the two effects - lighting and RNS production cannot be coupled (...IMHO). Of course, in one sense a fluorescent lamp is also a cold plasma :)
