I wouldn't say that. In my opinión, Facebook or any other general social network might be useful just to feel the pulse of any human group, or even the whole society, but no more.
You might find cultural trends via social media, but how would you ensure a representative sample? Social media is SO customized to the individual that you may have trouble ensuring a representative sample.
