Lobelia siphilitica needs 2 months of stratification in cold to break seed dormancy. Does any of the other species I mentioned have a similar or a different requirement?
The following information is from the International Seed Testing Association: ISTA Rules, 2015 Edition.
website www.seedtest.org (the Rules are not on the website though, you have to pay for them).
The above mentioned rules only cite two species of Lobelia.
Lobelia cardinalis and Lobelia erinus and the germination protocol is the same for both species, as follows:
Top Paper Alternating 2030ºC or constant 20ºC
1rst count 7–14 days
Final count 21 days
Pre treatment : KNO3; Prechill
When alternating temperatures are indicated, the lower temperature should be maintained for 16 hours and the higher for 8 hours. A gradual changeover lasting no more than three hours may be satisfactory, but a sharp changeover lasting one hour or less may be necessary for breaking dormancy.
The higher temperature phase should have light and the intensity should be between 750 and 1250 lux from cool white lamps.
Prechilling should range from 5 to 10 ºC .
Hope this may be of help.
If you have any further questions don't hesitate to contact me.
Just thought to update this info could be useful for someone: L. spicata germinated well without prechilling treatment; L. cardinalis did not germinate with or without cold treatment!
Time to germination is influenced significantly (P = 0.010) by light exposure prior to cold exposure – see American Journal of Botany. 2000;87:124-132.
