I would like to create a simple 3D model of a site with travertine terraces in a river valley. It was a large travertine cascade like the recent Mammoth hot springs in Yellowstone, with numerous terraces. However, my cascade had a water pool on each terrace, with numerous aquatic animals and plants, whose remnants currently deposited in travertines and ancient alluvium. Please find attached an aerial photograph of the site (red arrow indicates the upper part of the travertine deposit). I understand that the detailed 3D picture of such a complex system is impossible, but I would like to make something like a green slope + several stepwise terraces with white borders and blue water pools + blue river at the bottom + some rocky outcrops. Such a simple image seems to be a nice addition to the paper with description of subfossil molluscs records. I would be grateful for any advices.

My first instinct would be to use a drone to take high resolution images of this site and reconstruct them with Agisoft or Pix4D. Check their website to look at some case studies that look similar to yours (outdoor, same distance, comparable area surveyed, etc.), you will get detailed information about what camera they used, their flight path, etc.

If you have satellite or GIS data for the site you can use NVIZ or even a mainstream 3d modelling application such as Lightwave, Maya, or Blender (blender is even open source so no cost to use it). Then you could tweak the resulting 3D model to your hearts content from within the application.
