I want to understand the overview of Kalman filters and what purpose do they serve. I am trying to leverage this platform as I am not sure about other authentic sources on the internet to get this information. Please suggest one if you know. On another note, if I have a signal that is a mixture of various frequencies; can Kalman filter be used to extract the DC or average value of this signal? Please let me know how does it work. Thanks in advance.

I would say that there are other methods for extracting the DC or average value of this signal. Actually, I would say that if you would use Kalman filter, then you would actually need to first extract the values using appropriate algorithms, and then you would use Kalman filter to improve the estimation of the extracted features, by combinig the extracted features that you would get by using multiple different algorithms for extracting DC or average values.
Rohan, these are filters that use a clever mathematical algorithms to clean up noisy data samples, in real time. Also can be used for prediction. Many applications, such as for navigation systems, which may use noisy sensors, or which may require near-term prediction. Many articles available online, as previous responders show.
