I know that Maruxa Alvarez (Vigo University) worked on that in high altitude streams, here's a recent paper but there might be more: Alvarez, M. and Peckarsky, B. L. (2013), The influence of moss on grazers in high-altitude streams: food, refuge or both?. Freshwater Biology, 58: 1982–1994. doi: 10.1111/fwb.12185

Also Mirela Sertic-Peric did some interesting work on moss-related invertebrates in tufa streams in Croatia.I found these references online, but I believe there is more to come out soon:

There is a large body of literature on the tiny Vertigo species, mostly protected in Europe, particularly V. geyeri which lives in mossy tufa-forming mossy springs. The main paper is Speight MCD, Moorkens EA and Falkner G (eds) (2003), Proceedings of the workshop on conservation biology of European Vertigo species. Heldia 5.
