I am currently practicing image analysis software ImageJ so that I can use it in my experiment to quantify unreacted flyash and silica fume particles. My mix design contains cement, flyash and silica fume. I would highly appreciate if anyone could help me with the steps for analysis the BSE image to find out the un-reacted flyash and silicafume. I have attached a reference BSE image of one of my sample.

I am referring the research papers from your whole group @ EMPA for most of my research.
You can also see another paper "Quantification of the degree of reaction of fly ash" By Dr. MB Haha. Both this paper and the one suggested by Dr. Lura introduced methods for the quantification of fly ash in binary cement pastes. However, silica fume cannot be characterized by using BSE image analysis, as SF particles are too small, as stated in a newly published reports by RILEM TC238.
Yuo might check Ch. 14 in FHWA HRT-04-150, Petrographic Methods for Examining Hardened Concrete. It provides a general overview and specimen preparatin techniques.

The paper by Deschner et al. that I suggested is a further development of the methods used in Ben Haha et al. (also an Empa contribution). This latter method is more robust and reliable.
For the degree of reaction of silica fume, image analysis might not help as pointed out by Dr. Ma. NMR should be the best solution.
