Hello! I am studying the aquatic macrophyte Elodea canadensis as a nonnative species in Europe. I would like to receive published research, grey lityerature, or even "personal observations" on nuisance growth of this species in warm climates (e.g., Mediterranean, subtropical), including from its native distribution range in North America. during our sampling for water in a Greek lake in early autumn, we came across a floating cut incomplete specimen of what it appears to be E. canadensis, but both the identification and the presence of a rooted specimen need confirmation. So far, the species' presence in Greece hasn't been brought to our attention. As we will be returning to the area for macrophyte sampling this summer, I will keep you posted.

Thanks a lot for the info! Your record (if confirmed) could be the first for Greece. Hussner (2012) reports that Greece is (or at least was at the time of his survey) one of only 5 European Elodea-free countries. Both Elodea canadensis and E. nuttallii appeared to be widely distributed in Bulgaria. Attached is an article focused on BG lakes - as you can see these species are common not only for lowland, but also for semi-mounatin and mountain lakes/reservoirs.

I would no say common, but there are recorded events with nuisance-level growth (for example, please see the link: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13102818.2014.901682#.VP3UiuHEXIU). All the best, Gana

Interesting the comments about Greece. The CABI datasheet for E.canadensis lists it as "widespread" in Greece, though the reference looks a bit dodgy...

Hello Doctor Lobato, Yes, Elodea is also present as far south as Florida, we have found it in some streams and also lakes (http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/node/151), although this site refers to it being found up in Jackson county, I do believe we had some down in Southwest Florida as well (http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=ELCA7).

Dimopoulos et al.(2013) in their Vascular plants of Greece: an annotated checklist, do not list E. canadensis as present in any status. I will certainly look into the original reference of CABI, which you kindly brought into my attention.

Like Thomas, we are maritime temperate here in Lincolnshire, UK. We have enormous problems with Elodea spp., thriving in eutrophic stillwater or running water systems. The loss of appropriate herbicides means that we have stillwater fisheries put out of business by this genus - the fishery is completely filled with it and physical removal is almost pointless as it can facilitate spread. Interestingly, the problem species was E. canadensis in the past, but E. nuttallii is now, by far, the more common & widespread nuisance species for us. Many low-energy rivers have stands running bank to bank.
I am from a cool temperate area and this species -along with Elodea nuttallii does very well under these conditions. However, in the shallows in lakes I have measured temperatures of 27 C at 1m depth and within this depth both species can be abundant. I suspect that temperatures in shallows may even attain higher temperatures. Hope this might provide some information of value. Best wishes, Dan.
