Hi, Could any body explain about soil moisture input in WRF? Is it an entry in WRF? Is there any remote sensing data for soil moisture, especially from RADAR? Is there any way to input soil moisture from remote sensing data in it?
Soil moisture is initialized in WRF via WPS, values depend on the meteorological analysis/forecast dataset used as surface boundary conditions.
Please see the section on Initialization for real data cases in this page http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/docs/user_guide_V3/users_guide_chap4.htm#Real
I'd suggest our paper on the assimilation of satellite soil moisture data on WRF (see attachment).
Several sensors are available for measuring soil moisture from space (ASCAT, SMOS, SMAP, AMSR-E, AMSR2, ESA CCI, ...). These datasets have nearly daily temporal resolution and 25X25 km space resolution. Many related answers with more details are available on RG (e.g., https://www.researchgate.net/post/which_are_the_better_satellites_for_soil_moisture_studying_in_arid_zones; https://www.researchgate.net/post/How_can_I_get_the_soil_moisture_products_freely_online; ...).
In the near future, satellite soil moisture from Sentinel-1 will be available.
