As matter is active, the flux is always moving, changing forms, according to the Universal laws of this particular pocket Universe, which the Multiverse created by inflation in a quantum bubble (cf. Alan Guth, Lawrence Krauss, et al.). As to the eternal (for we exist, so an eternal first ungrounded ground exist, pace Kant’s antinomy of the first cause in The Critique of Pure Reason) Multiverse, it is pure chaos in the sense that it is the most simple, less ordered complex and less organized order of matter. The eternal Multiverse is not something to pray to, or to thank for, as it has no plan for us, no Providence for the good or the bad which happens to us. The eternal ungrounded Ground-Multiverse is indifferent, blind, pure force, pure chaotic power. Order comes with complexity for us Homo sapiens: matter, hydrogen, helium, carbon, water, DNA, unicelular animals, multicelular animals, animals with brains, as they move, and multicelular animals with brain with a neocortex which offers self-consciousness and abstract thought. From the most simple and chaotic origin of the eternal Multiverse to the most complex and ordered part of the Universe, the self-conscious and very sophisticated mind of a multicelular animal. It is chaotic matter and matter knowing that it is matter. As the adagio reads: A physicist is the way atoms have of studying other atoms. there are two possibilities - one is that, what was once an orderly whole, now it is caught in a chaotic turbulence, disarray or similar - a quasi-temporal understanding, if you like.

The other is - well, there is some order, perhaps invisible, yet to be disclosed, in chaos too. 'chaos' as a container of a hidden order - a spatial understanding, if you like.

This is strictly semantic. As to philosophical aspects - the Greek roots of the words etc., I leave this aside.

I see some scholars read some religious themes into the phrase. I see no space for such an automatic reading.
