The correlation between team purpose/trust and work-family synergy is .10 (ns) in my sample (N = 319). In my AMOS structural model, the standardized regression coefficient for these variables is -.23 (p < .001). How do I explain this apparent anomaly?
As far as I can see they don't measure the same things since one is a correlation coefficient and the other one is a regression coefficient in the SEM model. I would not expect them to be same. I assumed that was your question. Best wishes, David Booth
This could indicate a suppression effect. The zero-order correlation is zero yet the predictive value of the same variable in the context of a larger regression model is statistically significant. Is the predictor substantially correlated with another predictor in the model so that it might act as a suppressor variable?
Search for 'Wright Tracing Rules' and see how correlation coefficients are used to compute path estimate. You may be able to troubleshoot anomaly by manually tracing each pathway (keep the model simple).
Some key rules are: 1) no loops (no-go twice); 2) no going forward then backward; 3) a maximum of one curved arrow per path.
