Various materials based on the appropriate processes defined may be used.
For example, in a partial chlorination route, iron in the rhodochrosite concentrate is converted to FeCl3. Then, it is reduced to iron in the presence of the coke, while the rhodochrosite is broken down into manganese oxide.
Roasting is the first step for processing in which CaCl2, Ca(OCl)2, C are normal materials used.
Rhodochrosite (MnCO3 or (Mn,Fe,Mg,Ca)CO3) can be converted to a manganese alloy containing Mn, Fe, and C by the following two steps:
Calcination
MnCO3(s) -> MnO(s) + CO2(g)
Reduction
MnO(s or l) + C(s) -> Mn(l) + CO(g)
It can also be done in a single step, but this would require more carbon and energy.
