Sometimes Cynodon dactylon is a major weed in dry direct seeded rice cultivation and its control is also difficult by herbicides. Is there any selective herbicide for control of this weed?
In my personal experience for management of Cynodon dactylon here in Guatemala we apply irrigation for stimulate the emergence of some leaves and then spray with glyphosate 3.0 l/ha using a spray volume of 300 l/ha. It must be previous to sowing corn and also will be useful to control other weeds like Cyperus rotundus. The melon growers also use it spraying after they put the plastic cover, when Cynodon dactylon structures are emerging also with other weeds.
Clomazone is relatively recent herbicide in rice as pre-emergence for complex weed control. This herbicide is metabolized to the 5-keto form of Clomazone. The 5- keto form, which is active herbicide, inhibits 1-doxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate suybthase, a key component of plastid isoprenoid synthesis. Symptomology of clomazone includes bleaching that can progress to the necrosis. I have tried this herbicide as pre-emergence in sugarcane crop against Cynodon dactylon, grassy and broad leaved weeds. It gave excellent control of Cynodon and other weeds except Cyperus rotundus in sugarcane. You can access: Rice tolerance to saflufenacil in clomazone weed control programme.
