Content-Based Learning: Teaching Language Through Meaningful Content One of the most effective ways to support multilingual learners is by integrating language instruction with subject-area content. Content-Based Learning (CBL) allows students to develop both academic language and conceptual understanding at the same time. When language is taught through real-world topics, like science, social studies, or literature, students are more engaged, motivated, and confident. Research by Brinton, Snow, & Wesche (2003) and Gibbons (2015) supports the power of this approach in inclusive classrooms. By using CBL, we shift from teaching about the language to teaching through it.
