Maybe about The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes and the ICMCI and their guidelines like Professional Code of Conduct ICMCI (cmc-global.org) and i.e., what it requires to be a professional consultant
In Research Methods, the focus is on the traditional research process and the methods used. In the consulting process, one of the major concerns is the need of the stakeholders- the clients. Usually, the method used is that of action research as differentiated from traditional research. You need to differentiate too the role of the management consultant from the organization development consultant. The process is different since there is entry and contracting, diagnosis and feedback, implementation of interventions, evaluation and institutionalizing the change effort. Consulting can be a one time thing focused or limited to a specific intervention, but the OD work is concerned with the whole process.

Sridhar, do you present a typology for the models of engagement?
Edward, could you elaborate on the specific Skills, Approaches, Methods and Tools that you include?
I am also designing a graduate-level Management Consulting course that I will deliver in the upcoming semester (September-December 2021). A big decision is how to balance the more analytic approaches (strategy models & tools such as 5 Forces, PESTEL, McKinsey 7S, Value Chain, and RBV) with more active approaches such as the Action Research method based on the principles and criteria developed by Davison et al. (2012, 2021).
What are your thoughts on the appropriate balance?
Under skills, approaches, methods and tools - lectures include the following topics: Communication Competence, Problem Solving, Intellectual Competence, Leadership Competence, Analysis of Information (business analysis and industry analysis) How to conduct desk top research and business research, Sources of Primary and Secondary Information, and Types of analysis that consulting firms use (also what methods and techniques that appear in many graduate level strategic management textbooks) - PESTLE, SWOT, McKinsey, etc. Spend approximately 16 hours covering these subjects using many examples. I also cover the limitations of using these methods.
Consulting courses for business students are different from research methods. In general, research methods are more theoretical while consulting courses are more hands-on and practical. Research methods seek to impart knowledge and provide information, while consulting courses are intended to develop abilities.
I have drafted a learning plan for a semester long (12 week) graduate-level Management Consulting course. It aims to complement our existing courses which include Strategic Management and Leadership. Thus, core topics from those courses are not covered in this new one.
Your timely comments on my draft learning plan would be appreciated.
We offer Change Management as a follow-up course to this one, so I will leave out those topics, but I will add NDAs and confidentiality to the syllabus.
Is there a standard code of ethics for (management) consultants?
CA Vinod Kr Sharma The way I see it and due to previous training programs that I have conducted there are a lot of common between consulting and entrepreneurship, i.e, the B2B selling process is much the same.
Perhaps the biggest surprise so far was the keen interest of students in a presentation of Action Research. After asking many 'how to' and 'why that' questions, most students agreed that the principles of Action Research would be very useful for consulting projects that aim to implement changes instead of simply recommending them.
