I have a system that I am having trouble to describe, in essence:

*In the absence of an exogenous substrate, enzyme "A" is always expressed and displays reasonable activity.

*In the presence of a substrate, activity of enzyme "A" increases upto five fold.

*In the presence of excess substrate, a very similar enzyme "B" also becomes active

Whilst enzyme "B", can clearly be defined as induced I am less certain how to describe enzyme "A", as it does not really fit either definition of induced or constitutive.

Some definitions of a constitutive enzyme are simply "An enzyme produced even in the absence of the substrate" however others elaborate further stating "expression level is independent of the substrate concentration". Which is why I am having trouble.

The expression of this enzyme is arguably essential for normal function ( intracellular degradation pathways), but is also utilized for exogenous substrates acting as an energy source.

So does constitutive or induced best describe my enzyme? or is there an alternative term that better fits?
