I majored in biochemistry and do chemical registration consulting work.

Recently, I have been working on chlorine bleach, and a problem has arisen in identifying decomposition products. Chlorine bleach is known to decompose into chlorine ions and chlorate when decomposed.

3 NaClO → 2 NaCl + NaClO3

However, in the analysis results using ion chromatography, most of the decomposition products were identified as chlorine ions, and only a small portion or almost no chlorate was identified. The amount confirmed by peak width was at least 50 times greater. These results showed a significant trend.

We look forward to your kind advice as to why this result occurred.

Was there a problem with the analysis?

(It was confirmed that there was no interference effect caused by chlorine ions.)

Or is there an additional decomposition mechanism for chlorate?

For reference, the sample is a typical chlorine bleach.
