I would like to compare the performance of AODV, DSR, OLSR and ZRP. What should be the general topologies I should use e.g., how many nodes, mobility, etc? And secondly what is the right comparison metric e.g., end-to-end delay, throughput, etc? I am using NetSim simulator but pointers or papers with any simulator will be helpful

When comparing the performance of AODV, DSR, OLSR, and ZRP, it is recommended to use a set of well-defined metrics and a variety of scenarios to draw meaningful conclusions. A good starting point could be to use a topology with 50-100 nodes, random waypoint mobility model, unicast traffic with varying packet sizes and rates, and comparison metrics such as end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, and throughput. It is also important to validate the results using statistical tests to ensure the reliability of the conclusions.
To analyze the performance of Adhoc routing protocols, you can start with a simple network with a few nodes placed within range of each other such that communication can happen in a single hop. Then set up the range of the devices such that packets are sent via multiple hops. You can vary the number of hops in steps to see how each protocol performs routing, considering the routing overheads, convergence time, time for recovery in case of failures, etc, in addition to the traditional metrics such as the latency and throughput.
NetSim also supports a range-based path loss model, which allows you to define a fixed range for the wireless nodes, which will make it easier for you to configure multi-hop communication.
