Any governmental action will not lead to the desired outcome unless NGOs interact in adopting environmental projects. Start an information campaign to clarify the problem and express scientific views and proposals in proposals and priorities. Cooperation with international organizations can be undertaken to preserve and improve the environment.

I'm sure you've considered it Dickson, but what about environment days about once a month or every three months, which may include plant a tree sessions; environmental cleaning or exciting discussions on environmental awareness? There are always a small number of people who want to be involved and active in such things.

This problem is experienced by most developing countries due to the backwardness and weakness of environmental laws. The right solution is to spread environmental awareness and culture in all sectors of the society, starting with schools and kindergartens,with the establishment of a high environmental court as in other criminal courts.

Much top spoil washes away, many places faster than it is replaced. Soil pollutes the rivers and estuaries, also filling the reservoirs.. Some top soils are thin as in tropical forest, and easily lost, but restored with difficulty.

An effective program should find ways to put the soil back on the land, maybe by change of irrigation to pump from bottom of reservoirs and rivers. Other measures are to slow down the speed of rain runoff to keep the soil on the land.

Woodlands and grass lands are helpful. Also better farming methods are needed. Fish farms are interesting in that they produce food. They also collect sediment that can be helpful when pumped onto farm land.

Firts I will begin to tech kids and young community to care about the environment and try to work with their own sources, second I will totally avoid the use of plastics, third, I would try to contact entomologist to try to find and experiment that insects get involve. Insects will help to reestablish green material and to reestablish green material always using natives plants. Guatemala came up with the idea of spreading seeds from native plants with the use of an helicopter to spread seeds on affected areas. The project is Spanish but they came up with a realistic idea of trying to imitate a huge pollinator, they are doing this since on the affected areas, people are become to use it as places to build house instead of planting trees. If you want me to translate the document of this method I will try to do it.

Dear Dickson, a strong ‘socio-political commitment’ is the key for greening any country or the state. Mass plantation has its own significance in greening an area, however, carrying forward the streak is a combined effort of Community Participation, Area Management, Green Policies and time-bound initiatives. Technical/scientific interventions are equally vital as the revival of Biocultural practices for a sustained movement for a greener world.

I am offering you one of the most successful examples in the world, the “Sikkim Green Mission”; Sikkim is a federal mountain state of India in her north-eastern part. Starting in the year 1995 various green initiatives sparked like a revolution in the minds of people and policy makers, which bloomed over the past two decades, making the entire state a real green and clean. It carried forward with numerous POLICY INITIATIVES from the state Government under the leadership of green Chief Minister, serving over 23 years, which further ensured to be implemented. These included expansion of Protected Area networking (over thirty seven percent), the adopting ORGANIC mission, started in 2003, led Sikkim’s recognition as the first 100% organic state in India in January 2016 by the Union Government, and perhaps in the world, ban on grazing and green felling, 10 minutes to earth- a people driven mass plantation programme (Sikkim achieved 48% forest cover), declaration of Heritage Trees, legal provision on making tree(s) a friend, formation of eco-clubs in schools, plastic fee state, etc. For conserving its natural and cultural richness, the Khangchendzonga National Park (covers about 25% area of the state) inscribed as the World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2016, as country’s first mixed category further boosted up the Green initiatives. Sikkim Government and the people take ethics of ecotourism supported by its strong eco-tourism policy as important socio-economic activity.

In nutshell, I am alluding upon taking the peoples’ participation in decision making and the willingness of decision makers will greatly help taking your idea of “Community Greenization” successfully in Ghana and likely in other countries/provinces in the world.

We have to start by educating people, introduce and include the benefits of greenery to education. This way many people grow up with the knowledge already moulded in them and becomes second nature.

Secondly, Integrated greenery to Architecture and construction has to be made useful, not just for the physical aesthetics and environmental benefits but also for Social benefits, ie Vertical Farms.

Anthropogenic activities will not stop any time soon, we should therefore make sure we integrate greenery to education and construction.

The city of Philadelphia USA with the University of Pennsylvania has had some good programs working with neighborhoods to convert derelict spaces into community gardens that also function as parks and gathering places along with food production.

The project is dubbed 'keep the city clean and green', following funding from the National Investment Bank of Ghana. The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is liasing with the Department of Horticulture in my institution to carry out this project on the stretch of the Kumasi-Accra Highway from Idiom roundabout to the Asafo Interchange. Priority has been given to the planting of flowering plants, short flowerily shrubs, and trees which are from exotic breeds not local flora species. The strategy is coupled with the massive environmental and sanitation education to the general Ghanaian populace. Thanks

There are many people contributing here with valuable ideas that sound applicable to your work. As we are aware, cities are a complex system of self-organizing cultural and natural elements. As many have alluded above, participation by citizens, government, schools, and perhaps business, probably led by the municipality, in an interactive work setting series, a geographical plan to protect, restore, and add citywide "green infrastructure" might be developed. Within the plan, priorities and actions by multiple parties may be taken on by local supporters who make commitments to completion as a foundation of community relationships moving forward. Some projects will be social, some educational, some physical environment related, such as the highway project you mentioned. "Green" may mean enhanced visual quality, and it may also mean the restoration of nature's ecosystem services to the city, such as to restore water quality. Perhaps the process will generate community resolve and persistence to regenerate the green system that has been degraded. Unifying the people in a cohesive vision and commitment may give strong enough energy to counter the forces leading to diminished "green values" in the Kumasi.

Native species for sustaining ecosystem services; organic sustainable agriculture including reviving and modernizing old crops; new technology to generate and save energy and for agriculture, architecture and road construction; policy and government do matter; universities and schools sure; but public education is also critical right now, and in ways that people without much formal education, and those with formal education but little understanding of biology can understand. We need to use everything to build public support and understanding of why environmental protection and restoration are crucial and how people can assist the process and make better decisions for sustainable environments and how that fits with sustainable economies. In seeking solutions and assistance, we should include not only science, but also art, music, film, civic and religious groups as well as ngos, even comic books and soap operas where the drama is about finding and implementing solutions to environmental problems. Documentaries reach some people but so far not enough people. Planting trees, and reestablishing seed source for other native plants is important. Many people still think its enough to save what's left, or that nature can just regenerate itself, but we need to actively make sure healthy rare, threatened and endangered species are available where they are needed to produce seed, so ecosystems can regenerate. Not every tree needs to be planted by humans, but we need sufficient numbers to get the natural process working again. I'd like to know more about the results of spreading seed by helicopter as well and hope you translate that information into English. Meanwhile, maybe you can post a link to it in Spanish on this discussion.
