There have been lots of discussions and bemoaning about the disappearance of the Common House Sparrows from urban landscapes of India - quite a legitimate concern. The 20 March, has been declared as the World Sparrow Day to raise awareness not only about the house sparrows but also about the other common bird species found in urban environments, and educate ourselves about the threats to their populations. Of whatever little understanding that I have about the preferred habitats of the common house sparrows and other common bird species like the Jungle Babblers, they mostly prefer thickets and underbrush habitats. Now the question here is, do we really understand that? If common house sparrows and other such bird species common to the urban landscapes are to be conserved and protected, then, are their preferred habitats being created, promoted and conserved among the urban landscapes, especially in India? Is the creation, promotion and conservation of thickets/underbrush (hedges), included as a part of the urban plantation or urban greenery programs and projects? If we want the common sparrows and jungle babblers to make a come back then I don't think we can just brush the underbrush away in urban landscapes???
