As we know most of the intracellular pathogens modulate host pathways for survival inside host. Is it possible to identify few drugs that may be used for different diseases caused by intracellular bacterial pathogens?
Certainly, new, safe antimicrobial components (especially from natural sources) are being investigated daily by researchers. However, such antimicrobial candidates must be selectively toxic. Also, some components are not outrightly antimicrobials but modify host cell pathways, making it less conducive for intracellular pathogens. However, since its activities would be required within the host, coupled with the idea that host metabolism could alter a presumably safe component to become toxic to such host, adequate assays and clinical tests would be required before anything translational could be thought of such agent. Basic screening procedure are freely available online I guess.
