i have inquiry regarding the reduction of columns over height of reinforced concrete frames
is it for strength of architecture or economic purposes ??
and what is the preferred condition for earthquake design is it reduction or maintaining the same size over height

Yeah.. you can reduce height of the column but cross section size of column have to increase .
If the cross section siZe increase then it goto uneconomical side..
If you design your building for earthquake (lateral loading) then you should use shear wall around the lift or at corner ..

While designing a multi storied structure, the only thing should be kept in mind is that, the entire weight of the structure has to be bear by thick sized components available on lower side; as compared to the upper part it has less weight, hence the lower part structural members are thick in size while upper part members are thin in size.
Now, as per economical point of view, as i said above, due to lower weight on upper side, the member size can be reduced.
Now, coming up to the earthquake criteria, the only thing that you have to pay attention is make the lateral load resisting components entirely uniform because it helps the structure stiff and not allow it to move entirely.

In general, both gravity and lateral loads on a high-rise structural systems find a way to apply to the foundation level which is at the lower part of the building. Therefore, the lower parts of columns should carry loads coming from upper floors in addition to the local loads at their floor of position. Larger forces require larger cross-sections. That's why columns are thinner at higher levels and thicker at lower ones.
Just doing for economical purpose .
But same dimension is the best .
